Here Comes Peter Cottontail: The Movie (1999)

70021136      Here Comes Peter Cottontail

NETFLIX SYNOPSIS: Peter Cottontail (voiced by SpongeBob SquarePants’ Tom Kenny) gets an updated look in this animated re-creation of the stop-motion classic from 1971. While Peter is preparing for Easter, his enemies January Irontail (former Bond Roger Moore) and Jackie Frost (SNL’s Molly Shannon) plot to thwart the bunny’s plans and take away his holiday cheer. Christopher Lloyd also lends his voice in this musical adventure.

REVIEW: Don’t count me in with that particular lunatic fringe of otherwise sane folk who get all teary-eyed and nostalgic about the Rankin-Bass holiday specials of yesteryear. I’ve long suspected that someone — Rankin maybe, or Bass possibly, or it could have been the dastardly Heat-Miser — regularly spiked the company water cooler with LSD, which would explain a lot when you think about it. One of the more bizarre RB offerings was the 1971 Easter special Here Comes Peter Cottontail, which pitted Peter against January Q Irontale for, uh, the right to deliver Easter Eggs (not exactly world domination, now is it?). Even more ludicrous is this 2006 direct-to-video sequel, in which Peter’s son battles ol’ Irontale for something to do with the seasons. A large clock is also involved. Despite voice work from notables like Christopher Lloyd, Kenny “Spongebob” Thomas and Roger Moore, any potential is quickly snuffed by the eccentric story and the unsightly CGI which appears to have been completed by one guy laboring on a PS-one development kit in his spare time. There’s good and there’s bad, but this is just UGLY.
